Johanne Hestvold is a third year student at the art academy in Bergen. Her work straddles the line between painting and sculpture, with minimalism and sculpture as important references. With selected paintings as a starting point, she builds installations that are both translations and abstractions of the referenced painting.
Hestvold is dealing with space and presence. How conditions like size, weight, material and placing affect us when we enter a room. These relations are also investigated in "The expectation of silver (Turner)" at Galleri Fisk. The reference for this piece is "the light painter" Turners "Snow Storm: Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps" form 1812. The dramatic painting is translated into an installation that deals directly with the architecture of the gallery space. The piece is activated by the presence of the audience.
